UHR gold eagle First strike rule from PCGS

According to the mint news blog and PCGS website

Quote:

According to the PCGS website, in order to receive the PCGS "First Strike" designation, the coins must be submitted sealed in the post marked Mint shipping box.
That means, DO NOT OPEN IT UP AND LOOK AT IT!!! If you are lucky enough to receive your coin quickly and in time to get it to PCGS for first strike grading, make sure you keep it in the box unsealed.

I posted this to help anyone out, if anyone finds that this information is incorrect and can link some reliable proof, I will change it, but I dont want to see anyone lose the chance to get a grading that might be worth some serious cash.

"First Strike" isn't worth serious cash. It's marketing hype to fool the fleabay crowd.

Igor, thanks for the post. The paragraph on the PCGS website certainly isn't written very well. It leaves open room for interpretation.

Here is the entire paragraph from PCGS on the issue:

Quote:

First Strike designation is available on qualifying coins for an additional $14 per coin. This fee covers the cost of the special First Strike insert and return of mint packaging if applicable. To qualify for First Strike, coins must be sent to PCGS or sent in a mint-sealed package postmarked within 30 days of the original release date. Cut off dates to qualify are below. For coins sent to PCGS prior to the cut off, customers are encouraged to submit coins in their acrylic capsules only. Coins submitted for First Strike should be submitted on separate submission forms from non-First Strike coins with separate return shipping.

First Strike 2009 Cut-Off Dates:

Coin Cut-Off
MS/PR First Spouse Gold Coins (Hannah Van Buren) Jan 7th
MS Gold Eagle Jan 31st
MS Silver Eagle Jan 31st
Ultra High Relief Mar 11th

The way I interpret what PCGS says is that there are two ways to qualify for "First Strike" designation. The first way is to get the coin to PCGS before their cut-off date of March 11th. I believe this is correct because later in the paragraph, they state
Quote:

Cut off dates to qualify are below. For coins sent to PCGS prior to the cut off, customers are encouraged to submit coins in their acrylic capsules only.
It would be impossible to send just the coin and its acrylic capsule without first opening the box.

The second way to get First Strike would be to send the unopened box that shows a mint shipping date within 30 days of the release date which I would assume to be March 11th.

I have never shipped anything to PCGS, but that is the way I read it.

Is there anybody with first hand experience with this issue?

:confused_ma: Others can do as they please but me...When I receive mine,I will open it and submit JUST the coin in it's capsule. As long as I have it POSTMARKED by 3/11/09, There will be no worries. On a similar submission..They had a quarterly special that ended 12/31/08 and I mailed a week before. It did not arrive at PCGS til 1/15/09 and they honored it.....So if in doult, give them a call to verify :s1:

Everyone can choose what they want to do. I'd love to have a MS70 First Strike - however, I realize that with me MURPHY's LAW happens in SPADES. :4_1_72::4_1_72:

And it ain't the NEW Adminstration's Fairness Doctrine - nope. It just the way it is.

So I HUMBLY just keep the little sucker in the MINT case and smile; that is when I receive this year or next? The BOOK it'll show up in 2011!

On a related note, the NGC date required for "Early Release" is March 9th.

I don't know what all this matters, with the Mint releasing these coins at a frustratingly slow pace, there will be precious few coins qualifying for special PCGS or NGC designation.

Exactly! Numismatically a First Strike or early release 70 is the exact same as a 70 without the designation. They are both perfect. In this particular case though, a First Strike or early release will be much more rare. Supply and demand.
